Essentials
- An instrument! I tend to use The Wind Section in Cumberland Street (they also have a ‘hire to buy’ scheme) Their ‘after sales’ service is excellent and they keep a good stock. There are sometimes flutes available on Gumtree/Ebay etc. but be very careful of the quality – happy to help advise.
- A tutor book. There are some great resources out there and it is important to find the right book for each player. The cost would be less than £10.
- Access to the student portal – a code will be sent to you when lessons are set up. This gives you a range of information including up to date invoicing, lesson notes, online resources and much more.
Helpful additions (in time)
- A music stand – this really helps with posture although propping a book up on a shelf will do the job until you get one of these. Don’t practice with the music on the floor as it will affect the direction of blowing in the flute.
- A metronome – given that flautists are at a distinct disadvantage of not being able to count out loud whilst playing, it’s helpful to have a metronome to assist with keeping the pulse. Great for Christmas presents!
