Teacher

Gwen has many years of experience in teaching the flute. Some of her pupils have gone on to play and teach themselves, whilst many simply enjoy the challenges and rewards of music making. Gwen studied with Andrea Kuypers at Napier University gaining both an Associate and Licientiate of the London College of Music (Teaching).

She has taught at George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh for 28 years and at Fettes College for 19 years. On top of this she has taught with the City of Edinburgh Council, Fife Council as well as fulfilling her role as ‘Neighbourhood Coordinator’ for Instrumental Music. Gwen co-directed and co-founded the successful Music Forward residential courses which ran for 6 consecutive years.

Gwen frequently presents her groups of players in concerts in such venues as the Usher Hall and Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh. She has presented well over 500 pupils for exams, ABRSM, TCL, HND and BMus performance as well as SQA National 5 & Higher.

During the recent lockdown Gwen adapted her lessons so that all pupils had the opportunity to learn online. She has now delivered well over 1000 lessons during this period and ultimately enjoyed the challenge of streamlining this service.

Gwen’s pupils have access to thorough lesson notes through the student portal as well as online invoices and resources. This makes it easy for everyone to keep track of lessons and work set for them. She also has many Youtube videos to support learning. You can follow Gwen here.

As a flute teacher her pupils range from age 8 to age 80 and she has enjoyed tailoring lessons for each individual and their particular targets.

There are over 50 instructional videos on flute playing to be found on Gwen’s YouTube channel ‘Fundamentally Flutey. Have a look
